The Living World
Nature surrounds us in the form of the living world, a world made up of living things. It is an amazing world.
Plants
From the tinist flower to the to the largest tree, there are an immense varity of plants. Scientists belive there are about 400,000 species, but it may be many more.
Fungi (fungus)
They may look like plants, but fungi are neither animals nor plants, but they are living things.
Animals
The animal kingdom consists of vertebrates (animal with backbone) and invertebrates (the creepy crawlies).
Animals with backbone
Vertebrates or, animals with backbone, are divided into five categories.
1. Mammal breath air. Most live on land, but some are aquatic.
2. Birds have feathered wings. Most can fly, but nat all (e.g. the
penguin).
3. Reptiles are cold blooded any rely on their environment for body
heat.
4. Amphibians are able to live on land or in water. They are cold
blooded.
5. Fish live in fresh water or sea water - or some can move between
two.
